TOOLS USED
Introduction
Many families, especially parents with young children and elderly individuals, find it challenging to use laundromat services due to their busy schedules or physical limitations. Parents often struggle to find time to transport laundry to and from laundromats amidst their daily responsibilities. For the elderly, the physical demand of carrying heavy laundry can be a significant barrier, making it difficult for them to manage their laundry needs independently.
The Problem
Many existing laundromat and dry cleaning does not offer pickups/ delibery, options require users to physically go to their locations, which is not always feasible for these groups. This lack of accessibility means that doing laundry becomes not just a chore, but a significant logistical challenge.
There is a clear need for a service that eliminates the need to travel to laundromats, providing a convenient, flexible solution that fits into the lives of busy parents and provides an accessible option for the elderly.
Solution
App Overview:
"LaundryMate" is a mobile app developed to significantly simplify laundry logistics for busy parents and elderly individuals by integrating essential services directly into their mobile devices. This solution offers:
This solution offers:
-
The in the app to find nearby laundry services. Compare their prices and read customer reviews to pick the best one.
-
Select the most convenient times for your laundry to be picked up and delivered right to your door.
Design Considerations:
-
The app features high-contrast visuals and larger buttons, making it easy to use for elderly users and anyone not familiar with smartphones.
-
Users receive timely updates about the status of their laundry, enhancing transparency and trust in the service.
The goal is to fill a gap and improve an existing service for the target audience.
User Research Overview
Target Users
My target users are elderly individuals or people with limited mobility, who primarily use basic mobile phone functions. Many of these users are unable to physically carry their laundry/dry clean to a store.
User Interview
To gather detailed insights into the laundry management preferences and challenges of busy parents and elderly users, and to evaluate the potential acceptance of the "LaundryMate" app.
Participants: Three interviews were conducted with different users: 2 elderly person and 1 busy parent.
Analysis:
Interviews showed a high demand for an app that makes laundry management flexible and easy. Key needs included better scheduling options and user-friendly features for those with limited physical abilities or less familiarity with technology.

Proto-Persona
Based on the feedback, I created the proto-persona, following improvements can be considered:
-
Easy access to the map or list of stores to browse and choose.
-
The scheduling flexibility in the app, allowing users to adjust pickup and delivery times easily.
-
Improve accessibility features, ensuring the app is usable by individuals of all ages and abilities.
-
Detailed descriptions and user reviews to help with service selection.
Competitor Analysis
For the next step, I have researched 3 different apps and signed up to try it myself, to better understand what they offer users. I want to see how others have designed their apps, what features they have implemented, and what interesting design elements they have introduced.

Key findings:
Poplin really stand out in the competitor analysis.
-
The sign-up process is inclusive, asking for age and whether the app is for personal or business use, tailoring the experience to user needs.
-
The main screen of the app is clean and user-friendly, featuring a prominent "New Order" button that simplifies the task of starting a laundry order.
-
App features and navigation style are straightforward and effectively meet essential needs.
