Introduction:

The goal of this project was to reduce purchase hesitation by addressing fit issues in advance and increasing the time users spend on the site. The virtual try-on feature aimed to attract users to try styles they might not usually consider, leading to more sales. This feature provided convenience and saved time, especially for busy customers who appreciate the ability to try on items virtually without visiting a physical store.

Project Overview:

Objective: To design and prototype a virtual try-on feature for an online apparel shop to improve user engagement, increase conversion rates, and enhance customer satisfaction by addressing fit issues and providing a convenient shopping experience.

Understanding The Product

Virtual try-on feature for an online apparel store that uses 3D modeling to allow users to see how clothes fit on personalized avatars, aimed at busy professionals and fashion-conscious students who seek convenience and accurate fitting without visiting a store.

Our Information Gathering Process:

  • This involves gathering requirements through questionnaires, user interviews, and data collection to uncover user needs.

  • Listening to the users to gather insights and feedback directly from them.

User Research

We conducted a survey with 50 participants to understand their shopping habits and preferences. Additionally, we got 10 in-depth interviews to dive deeper into specific pain points and behaviors.

Interesting findings:

Surveys and interviews indicated that users are highly interested in a virtual try-on feature, especially if it promises accurate size recommendations and a realistic user experience. Key issues highlighted include inconsistent sizing and a lack of information about garment fit.

Based on the research, we developed two key personas

  • A young professional: Newly employed and fashion-conscious, this individual likes discovering new trends and styles but values convenience and time-saving options due to work demands and daily activities. Fit issues lead to purchase hesitation and frustration. Accurate size suggestions based on his body type can reduce fit problems and returns. The ability to explore new styles without in-store pressure enhances his shopping experience.

  • A university student: Buys affordable and fashionable clothing online, is price-sensitive, and carefully considers each purchase, relying heavily on online reviews and recommendations. Budget constraints and lack of access to physical stores make it challenging to find well-fitting clothes.

Identified key pain points and opportunities for enhancing the shopping experience.

Key pain points:

  • Uncertainty about fit, even with size guides

  • Reliance on online reviews, which are often unclear

  • Purchase hesitation and frustration due to fit issues

  • Inconvenience of returns and time spent

Key opportunities:

  • Provide accurate size recommendations based on user body types

  • Create a more intuitive and informative shopping experience

  • Reduce guesswork and improve customer confidence in purchases

  • Enable users to explore new styles without go in-store

Detailed Solution Description

Technology Overview:
We used 3D modeling to develop a virtual try-on feature for our online clothing store. This feature creates personalized 3D avatars. Users input their information, such as height, weight, and choose the similar body type, then choose clothes from various categories. They can see in real-time how different outfits fit their avatar, providing a highly interactive and realistic experience.

User Interface Design:
The user interface is simple and functional, designed to be intuitive. It features a clear layout with a few strategically placed buttons on the right side, similar to current social media interfaces, making it familiar and engaging for users.

User Experience Enhancements:
Our approach to enhancing user experience centered around reducing friction and making the shopping process smoother. We mapped out a user journeys to identify potential pain points, leading to the development of an easy navigation flow that guides users from selection to try-on to purchase without unnecessary steps. Feedback loops were integrated through quick survey pop-ups post-purchase, allowing us to gather and implement user insights continuously.

Innovative Features:
One of the innovative features of our virtual try-on feature is the "WR"(We Recommended). This feature will need users to choose few of the words that are best describe them, which suggests complementary items based on the user current selection, also will recommend styles and accessories, encouraging users to explore new looks.

Wireframes and Sketches:
Created initial wireframes and sketches to visualize the virtual try-on feature.

Reflections and Future Directions

Learnings

I learned the importance of user feedback in the design process. By conducting usability testing and incorporating user suggestions, I was able to make meaningful improvements to the shopping experience. Even with high-fidelity prototypes, there is always room for further enhancement based on user testing results, ensuring the final product meets user needs and expectations.

Future Improvements

Moving forward, we aim to continuously improve the user interface based on ongoing user feedback. One key area for enhancement is the personalization of the shopping experience. By leveraging data analytics, we can tailor product recommendations and offers to individual users, making their shopping experience more relevant and enjoyable.

Continued Development

integrating new technologies, such as augmented reality for Virtual try-ons. By staying agile and responsive to market trends and user needs, we will continue to provide a top-tier shopping experience that keeps customers coming back.
